As many of you know, this year I have decided to get healthy. It is part of my “Self-Investment Program 2013” – get better, stronger and healthier inside out. So, one of the ways to begin is with our health. After all, they did say that healthy bodies and minds go hand in hand. Hence, it gives me great pleasure to interview one of Malaysia’s top Wellness Coach, Wong Yu Jin.
In Malaysia, Yu Jin is known as the “Wellness Guru” and is a very familiar face in the media. Yu Jin’s personal mission is to help others achieve optimum health and reach for their life goals. To put it mildly, he is transforming lives through inspirational wellness. As an established international speaker and a motivational coach, Yu Jin’s mission is fuelled and strengthened by his unique combination of experience across both the corporate and the wellness sectors. Yu Jin has inspired thousands to take charge of their health and be the best they can be. Whether he is speaking to an audience of five or thousands, Yu Jin always gives his very best. And I attest to that fact, not because I am a personal friend, but because I have seen him in action in various scenarios.
Yu Jin works very hard to get to where he is today. And that is not putting it mildly. His calling into wellness was not a choice he made from very young. In fact, Yu Jin was a law graduate with a double degree in Law and Accounting from Monash University, Australia. He was among “the best of the best” to be indicted into the Golden Key Honours Society. Yu Jin was called to the Bar and joined Murphy and Dunbar Advocates and Solicitors as a lawyer. Later, he moved onto the banking industry. Work was stressful and after seeing a colleague suffer a heart attack at work, Yu Jin decided to quit his job to pursue wellness.
Yu Jin made the courageous decision to change career and went back to school to immerse himself in the study of wellness. Now, he is a qualified sports and fitness coach under the International Sports Science Association and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition from the Global Institute for Alternative Medicine. He is also a certified hypnotherapist under the American Board of Hypnotherapist, a certified Neuro Linguistic Programming practitioner, a TLT (Time Line Therapy) consultant, an Impact SystemTM coach and a MasterClassTM Trainer. He is also a qualified squash coach and has extensive sports and fitness experience through his association with the National Sports Council and the Olympic Council of Malaysia.
To date, Yu Jin has trained top celebrities, models, beauty queens and TV personalities. Yu Jin is the Official Wellness Coach of Miss Universe Malaysia, as well. A reality TV entitled “Beauty Camp – The Search For The Next Miss Universe” was made which earned him the label, “Trainer Of The Stars”. As I mentioned earlier, he has become a household name. And not too bad for eye candy, if I might add 😉
One thing I can definitely say about Yu Jin is that he has an immense passion for life. Despite his hectic jet-setting schedule, Yu Jin finds time to cultivate work-life balance. He peppers his work and trainings with a tinge of fun whenever possible, as he strongly believes that life is too short to be taken too seriously. Whenever possible, he indulges in his other passions such as music and arts. It should not surprise anyone that he plays the piano and other musical instruments too.
I know what you are all thinking – is there anything that he cannot do? Well, would you just die if I told you that he can cook up a healthy gourmet meal too?
Every day, I get riddled with envy just by looking at the pictures of Yu Jin’s meals posted on his FB wall. And yes, he creates and cooks all those yummy meals himself. And yes, he is very creative at making healthy meals look like a breeze. So, now you can appreciate why I wanted to interview him in the first place. Apart from the fact that he is dishy, he is REALLY GOOD at wellness. So, here is a snippet of the Wellness Guru’s insights to getting healthy.
On The Myth of Exercise
One of the most common myths about exercise is that it is difficult. The truth is, even the slightest physical activity can bring about heaps of benefits. The key really is to get started and to start off easy. Rather than look at it as “exercise”, treat it as “physical activity”. That way, you can start at your own pace. Anybody at any age can start exercising and gain benefits from it.
On Which Exercise is Best For Us
To know which exercise is best, one must know clearly what his or her goal is. Too often, someone just wants to “get fit” or “get healthy”, which casts to wide a net. Once you know what exactly is your goal, you can narrow down the type of exercise that is best suited for that person.
On Why Exercise is Important
Humans are made to move. What we don’t use, we lose. It’s that simple. We start to lose 2% of our muscle mass every year after the age of 30. Hence, if you don’t stress those muscles, you will tend to lose it. In addition, for women in particular especially in Asia, osteoporosis is a threat. Exercise can assist in reducing your risk of such a disease.
On How Often Should One Exercise
There is a study called the Lancet study which suggest that as little as 15 minutes a day is sufficient to increase lifespan by 2 years. I would prefer to say 150 minutes of cumulative time per week.
On Moderation in Exercise
Definitely, just like too much sex! Exercise need depends on age, fitness condition, disease, gender and goals.
On Attaining Success and Consistency in Exercise
A lot of the success of exercise depends on the mind. I would say more than half your success depends on how you think initially. That means the attitude has to be right in the first place. It is important to have an intrinsic reason for exercising, that is something that comes from within. Perhaps it is to spend more time with your loved one, to become more confident or to last longer in your football game. You must be clear of your REASON.
Yu Jin’s Wellness Message to Everyone
Getting healthy is a journey, and not a destination. One should enjoy the process of transforming oneself to be a better being. That also means incorporating better eating habits, reducing mental stress and harmonizing oneself with spiritual side of things. Life is short, and you only have one body, so keep it healthy and clean!
